Section B

Passage for Q21:

Read the
following passage and answer the questions below:

Zoos should be
illegal because humans do not have the right to capture animals, tear them from
their families, and jail them, even if the animal is endangered. Animals are
abused, not given enough space and exercise, and they suffer from stress,
boredom, and depression. Many animals die prematurely because of a bad diet and
bad living conditions. Some polar bears get only ten meters of space when in
their natural habitat they walk hundreds of kilometers. In Woburn Safari park
in Bedfordshire, the government of England admitted to killing excess monkeys.
Animals, if reintroduced, will no longer be able to survive in the wild.
Animals born into zoos will no longer know how to hunt and do other things that
are necessary to survive. Two lynxes released into the wild were found dead
from starvation even though the area was full of hares – the lynx’s natural
prey.

There is a
commonly held misconception that zoos are not only saving wild animals from
extinction but also reintroducing them to their wild habitats. They would be
better off if we just kept them in their natural environment. If we keep
building zoos and keep taking animals captive, they will be dependent on the
human race and not get to do things that are natural and important to their
inherent nature.

Zoos are
morally wrong. Humans are animals too. What if humans started putting each
other in zoos? There would be an outrage. What if other animals got smart and
started keeping us in zoos? We would probably euthanize them for being
dangerous. We should protect the natural habitats instead of creating animal
prisons. The real reason people have zoos is because it helps them make tons of
money. The revenue garnered is mostly spent on concession stands, gift shops,
and other improvements, not for the good of the animals.

Animals in zoos
are treated as spectacles for human amusement. Imagine yourself as an animal,
stuck in the same room for the rest of your life. Torn from your family, stared
at all day by strangers. This is the grim reality for many zoo animals.

Questions:

(a) Why should
zoos be declared illegal?
Answer: Zoos should be declared illegal because they take animals away
from their natural habitats and subject them to captivity, stress, boredom, and
poor living conditions, causing untimely deaths.

(b) Why will
animals living in zoos not be able to survive in the wild?
Answer: Animals living in zoos may lose their natural instincts and
essential survival skills, such as hunting, and will not be able to survive in
the wild after being in captivity.

(c) Pick out
the words from the passage which mean the same as:
(i) Untimely – Prematurely
(ii) Delusion – Misconception
(iii) Readapt – Reintroduce
(iv) Collected – Garnered

(d) Pick out

Released:
(i) Left
(ii) Freed
(iii) Discharged
(iv) Exempted

Complaint Regarding Nuisance Caused by Loudspeakers in Our Locality

Respected
Sir/Madam,

I am writing
this letter to bring to your kind attention the persistent problem of loud
noise caused by loudspeakers in our locality. Over the past few weeks, many
functions and events have been taking place in our neighborhood, and
loudspeakers are being used at very high volumes, often late into the night.
This has become a major source of disturbance for the residents, especially for
the elderly, children, and students who are preparing for exams.

Despite
repeated requests to the organizers to reduce the volume and adhere to
permissible time limits, the nuisance continues. It is becoming increasingly
difficult to sleep or concentrate on work due to the constant noise pollution.

I kindly
request you to take immediate action to enforce the noise pollution laws and
ensure that loudspeakers are used within permissible limits and time
restrictions. Your timely intervention will bring much-needed relief to the
residents of our locality.

Thank you for
your attention to this matter.
