Sir/Madam,

I hope you are
doing well. I am writing to request you to kindly purchase some new English
dictionaries for the school library. The current stock of dictionaries is
outdated and insufficient for the number of students who need to refer to them
for various assignments and projects. Updated dictionaries will greatly help
students in enhancing their vocabulary and understanding of the English

A shabbily

birds inside. He kept on gazing at the birds. He went to the shopkeeper and
said, “How much for this cage with birds?” “Just eight hundred
rupees,” said the shopkeeper. The man took out some crumpled notes and
counted. He had only seven hundred thirty rupees. He said to the shopkeeper,
“This is all I have but I need this badly. Can I have it?” The
shopkeeper thought for a while then agreed to sell it to the man. The man
handed over the money to the shopkeeper, took the cage and opened the tiny
gate. The little birds inside flew away instantly. The surprised shopkeeper
asked him, “Why did you waste all your money when you had to set them
free?” The man said, “Never mind sir, I had been imprisoned for no
crime for the last three years. The precious thing I just bought, has given
these bits of paper a little worth.”

i) Why was the
shopkeeper surprised to see the man’s behaviour? (3 Marks)

  • The shopkeeper was surprised
because the man spent all his money to buy the birds and then immediately
set them free, which seemed like a waste of money to the shopkeeper.

ii) Why did the

  • The man set the birds free because
he had been imprisoned unjustly for three years and wanted to experience
the feeling of freedom, which he projected onto the birds.
The underlined portion, “the precious thing I just bought,” refers
to the freedom he gave to the birds, and “these bits of paper a
little worth” refers to the man’s belief that his money was well
spent by giving the birds freedom.
